There is some information at the matroska website and on other pages but so far nothing has worked for me. I don't want any links, just an explanation please. Last edited by bat; 6th Oct at For windows computers you can add a little basic info simply by right clicking the file and choosing properties. However I think it varies by file type of how much info you can add.

Also you could try using mpchc or vlc. They may have the ability to add details to the files. They play most video and audio files but I never tried to add descriptions with them - could be possible.

Edit - you might also try makemkv. It can create mkv files but it might also let you edit descriptions on existing mkv files. Worth a shot. Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? Originally Posted by yoda You have to try them yourselves.

The software I mentioned is free. I know for a fact the right click option allows access to title description and stuff but I think it varies between the different file types. The others are suggestions for you to try. I think the makemkv program will be your best bet to look into. It is specifically designed to create mkv files so I would assume it has info editing ability too.

I've been researching this for days and I can't find ONE program that can correctly edit or view Matroska metadata. Exiftool can see the first of the images and the metadata, although it's incorrectly formatted and still can't be edited. VLC can't see the metadata or images, and what's worse it pretends to let you change some media info but then doesn't actually save anything.

It's a nightmare.

Don't people care about metadata at all? The complete inability of what seems to be every program out there to deal with it is stunning. Without metadata you can't search clips. If you're recording your own clips, vital information like the timestamp will be lost you can't count on the filesystem stamp not to change. All I want is a permanent timestamp on my clips and if I'm real lucky, some keywords and a media player that can search them. But I guess that's too much to ask for. Originally Posted by Mr Hangman.

To be fair Matroska's TargetTypeValue system, while it makes sense on a high level, is perhaps confusing to figure out how to display.

The files presented here represent the minimum support a player should have to fully qualify as a Matroska player. Matroska can support any codec that is around. That doesn't mean softwares should support all of them. For various reasons softwares and hardwares can't always be upgraded to support all codecs around. But in the other hand there are a few safe codecs that are often found in Matroska and WebM that should be supported.

These codec can be found in various resolutions and features so even with the right codec support, it is not guaranteed that an implementation may support all the possibilities of a codec it is hardly ever the case.

This document will not cover codec details. But here is a list of codecs that are commonly found in Matroska:. It is important to note that audio can also be used in audio only files, usually with the. Those files should be handled as well, as long as the codec is supported. There are a number of features that are not essential to the playback experience but could really improve it, like support for tags, cover art, embedded fonts, segment linking.

There is also 3D support that is meant to grow in the coming years. Matroska should be able to support all the formats, but given the subject is really new, it's not covered by this suite of files. The sample comes from the Big Buck Bunny open project. It contains MPEG4. This file has different features that need to be looked at carefully. It also removes 2 bytes off each video and audio frame since they are all equal. These 2 bytes have to be put back in the frame before decoding. As the popularity of Matroska is quickly growing, it is becoming necessary to define a set of minimum features players should handle.

As we are pushing old features like the header stripping, we realise a lot of players hardware and software don't support such simple features.

Probably because they never had a set of source materials to validate their code against. So we have remedied this with a set of 8 files meant to cover the basic features a player should support to be considered a good Matroska player. The emphasis is on the container support not on the codec. It's possible some players may not support Theora for example in the "live" test file, but it's always possible to generate a similar file with mkclean --live.

We strongly encourage developers and companies that produce Matroska players to test these files on their product and make sure they all pass the test. We also encourage users to test these files too with their players and report the non success they are having.

Let us know if you have any suggestion on how to improve this test suite or if you think something is not correct. On there was an update to the Wave 1 pack as test2. As time went on, the format was improved and init became the basis for the WebM multimedia format. Contrary to popular belief, MKV files are not an audio or video compression format. MKV files are actually multimedia container formats. An MKV container can incorporate audio, video, and subtitles into a single fileā€”even if those elements use different types of encoding. For example, you could have a MKV file that contains H. MKV container files were designed to be future proof, meaning that the files would not become outdated.
